In the summer of 1995, I made a decision that I'd never again work for anybody for as long as I lived. At that time I was Director of Marketing for a large mailing list brokerage firm on Long Island, New York. I worked right under the President, was making a great salary doing all the marketing I could manage, and you would think I had it all.

One day, I was asked by the owner of the company where I wanted to be in 5 years. Honestly, I'd never given it much thought before that moment. Almost without a pause I looked him right in the eyes and stated that I wanted to be sitting in his seat within 5 years, or sooner.

Now I knew he wasn't going anywhere. This was his company that he started from nothing back in the late 1970's and he was going to stick with it for as long as he could, which could mean 3o to 45 more years!. In that moment I knew I had to make a decision that would change my life, so I did.

I asked my boss for an immediate 66% REDUCTION in my salary, and an immediate cancellation of all my cushy benefits. Needless to say, he was befuddled. He wondered what I was up to because most employees come in looking for more money and more benefits, not less.

I was dreaming big. I didn't want to be an employee all my life and I needed to make the decision to start my own business at some point, so why not right then and there?

My boss agreed to my request. I began coming in to work just 2 days a week instead of 5 to 6 days a week and spent the rest of the time building my own business. My old boss actually became my first consulting client, and since that time, I've never looked back!
